You Can’t Make Trees by Ray and Rachel Attfield

Arbeit Studios is hosting an exhibition titled "You Can't Make Trees" by the 2nd ReRooted Residency artists, Rachel and Ray Attfield, from May 3 to June 2, 2024, at Trowbridge Gardens Gallery in Hackney Wick, London.

Rachel and Ray Atfield create art using locally foraged natural materials, blending traditional craft and architectural skills. Their artworks, wooden and woven structures, explore the relationship between nature and urbanization, questioning humanity's tendency to control and civilize nature. The exhibition delves into the contradictions and perceived benefits of this relationship.

Exhibition Dates: Saturday 3rd February - Saturday 25th February, Open Saturday and Sunday ONLY 12pm to 4pm

Abi Ola was selected as Arbeit Studio’s first Artist in Residence, this exhibition is a culmination of her work during the residency and a wider display of her practice.

During her residency with Arbeit Studios Abi has been thinking about what the High Street means to her, as a life-long resident of Palmer’s Green. She has been experimenting with flowers, photography, collage, painting, and drawing whilst on this residency.

Symbols can act as a type of writing to convey a message, for example pictographs, and street signs communicate a lot of information through simple imagery. Abi wants to make her own vocabulary of unique motifs which each person can interpret differently.

Exhibition Dates: Open Daily 9am to 4pm, Tuesday 7 November to Sunday 3 December 2023

Location: Trowbridge Gardens Gallery, 1 Trowbridge Road, Hackney Wick, London, E9 5LD

Our soils are largely unknown to us, concealed by concrete pavements and tarmac roads; lying below, yet holding up and shaping a city. 'Wetlands' is a project exploring the hidden ecologies of Trowbridge Gardens, Hackney Wick and East London. Investigating wild clay and soil health, Jessy Harper-Solomon explores the often overlooked landscapes buried beneath our feet. Focusing on porosity and permeability during the ReRooted Residency, Jessy has gathered and processed wild clay, creating a series of ceramic vessels and worm compost for the garden. Exploring hospitality, conviviality and cyclic economies that embrace beyond human ecologies, she hopes this work becomes a lens through which we can understand and engage with underground environments. The exhibition seeks to highlight the importance of regenerative, reciprocal practices and the relationships between ourselves, other bodies and our landscapes.

Synergy

As part of ARBEIT studio’s WORK/Series season of workshops and exhibitions, Synergy is an exhibition of work by studio members Trashion Factory,  Humeera Dar, Nadine Duval and University of the Arts London’s AER ‘Art in the Environment’ resident Alisa Ruzavina. What these designers share and the exhibition explores is an interest in upcycling and circular design.

Trashion Factory uses clothes from local recycling warehouses that would otherwise end up in landfills and remakes them, into 'trashionable', wardrobe staples and one-off pieces. Humeera Dar runs a denim brand of the same name and her installation will explore themes around sustainability and upcycling. Nadine Duval creates one-off pieces for clients from off-cuts, reducing waste in the process.

Local artist and designer of ecological experiences and tools Alisa Ruzavina invites you to participate in the process of discovery of Waltham Forest's urban commons. Through creative interventions, communal mapping, play and making workshops passers-by are invited to add their voice to The Book of Local Knowledge and to contribute to the textile mural  Direct-Story Map that celebrates the local area and its residents.

For one month, the common space of Arbeit studios is transformed into a civic space for social dreaming and re-connection to local land, culture and community -  a playground for Waltham Forest to envision what earth-based heart-centred urban living might look and feel like.
